Simple Shorts – three pockets, zip-and-single button closure, belt loops – which score highly: they’re lightweight and low bulk, offer a great fit, comfortable stretch Odyssey fabric and plently of room for air movement. Those three pockets (the rear one is zipped for security) are reasonably sized and mesh-lined, which makes for even better sweat venting.
Despite the lack of a crotch gusset, there’s no cramped feel and the shorts allow good freedom of movement for scrambling or simply bounding over stiles. With a 30 cm inside leg, such nylon shorts aren’t really suitable for wearing beneath long trousers for any length of time but, being low weight and low packed volume, they’re worthy of consideration for backpacking as they’ll be barely noticable tucked away in a backpack when not worn.
The fabric is treated to repel bugs and water but the drought conditions of 2010 have left little opportunity to test either quality.
