The most lightweight shorts in the test, at under 200g, the Departures are a minimalist pair with only the bare essential features for walking and trekking. There’s just one secure pocket, and there’s a small rear one, plus two front hand pockets of a generous size. Half the waistband is lined for next-to-skin comfort, and there are belt loops (but no belt or elastic to help them stay up, so try before you buy).
The fabric is very light and treated with an effective DWR finish that sees the water bead and run off, although you have to cool wash them with non-bio powder and no fabric conditioner to help the DWR endure. There’s also an anti-mosquito treatment to keep the biting blighters away from your nether region. The nylon fabric, with 6% elastane, has impressive stretch from top to bottom, yet appears to have almost no lateral stretch. Overall these are good shorts.
