I thank my parents for always making me do things I was at first afraid of, and teaching me that trying something is better than not as you never know the benefits that thing could give you. I of course also thank them for their support and for giving me drive and discipline – they’ve had a huge impact on my attitude of trying to be hard-working in all areas of life.

Mick Fowler – An award-winning British mountaineer and author

My mum died when I was 3 so that’s a tricky one. I believe she had a love of the mountains as she joined my father on a guided ascent of the Allalinhorn on their honeymoon so perhaps I can thank her – and my father of course – for my love of the mountains.

My Mum made sure I was active and tried lots of sports. But she let me make my own choices in life and learn from my own mistakes. She was happy to let me go out orienteering by myself from when I was seven and appeared to show no concern when I was often out for over two hours

For introducing me to climbing and giving me a belay now and again!

A very important piece of knowledge and advice my mum gave me was, that you can learn everything. You won’t become a master or a World champion in everything but up to a certain level, if you just want to and try, you can learn it. As a child I had not much self-confidence and understanding and believing in this statement meant a huge change for me.
