Sam Hamer – Climbing Adventure in Thailand

I have just returned back from a fantastic first trip to Asia where I visited Thailand and the world famous paradise that is Tonsai. I had heard of this place very early on when I started climbing as a beautiful area to visit, where the water, beach and rock all come together to form a perfect paradise! It was a place I just had to get to and experience first-hand. So with tickets booked, I had 9 days in Tonsai which was just enough to get the flavour of the place.

The climbing was incredible with super steep routes coming straight off the beach, covered in pockets, jugs, tuffas and many amazing stalactites dripping from the side of the walls! So in quite a short time I tried to climb as many classic and inspiring lines as I could all around the Tonsai and Railay area. Conditions were a bit different from what I’m used to, being incredibly hot and humid!! This was quick tricky at times making even the warm ups feel a bit ‘spicey’ let alone trying to redpoint something hard in +35 degrees! I’ve never sweated that much before in my life! But anyway I got used to it and just got on with it. You just had to fight hard to get up some of the routes. No pain, no gain as they say! Here were some of my favourite lines: Cafe Adaman 7b, Tidal Wave 7b+, Just Dusit 7c, Definitely makes you whinge 7c, Phet Maak 7c+, Voodoo doll 7c+, Gaeng som pla 7c+, Elephant 8a, Sex Power 8a, Just call me Helmet 8a, Tantrum 8a+ and Cream of Tom Yum Kai 8a+. But to be honest with you, every route I did was pretty special!

So in the end it was an amazing trip and I got to climb around 40 spectacular routes in one of the most beautiful regions in the world! I hope to go back there as soon as possible for a longer period.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Berghaus for the kit they gave me for my trip. I really appreciated it and made good use out of all of it.
