Great father and son bonding action in North Wales the other weekend.
It was Cwm Silyn on the Saturday. I hadn’t been there since 1982 and rapidly demonstrated that I had completely forgotten how to find the crag. Fortunately Mike Morrison and Rob Smith were with us and they had been uncharacteristically organised and brought a map. Once the crag had been found sociable action ensued as we bumped into Mike Pinney at the bottom and then Bill Birkett and son who passed us during our leisurely soak-in-the-sun kind of ascent of Outside Edge Route. I’d never done it before and the fact that I had somehow forgotten my rock boots simply added to the interest. Brilliant!
Cwm Idwal on Sunday and my first time on the Slabs since 1975. Even I could remember how to find the Slabs. And I remembered my rock boots too. There was more sociable action as we bumped into Jo Scott, Berghaus’s Brand Manager, and then, late in the day, we were high on Grey Slab on Glyder Fawr. Here I managed to inject extra interest by missing the belay with the result that we ended up moving together and then taking a semi hanging stance on a couple of nuts. Alec was calmly appreciative of my efforts to make the final climb of the weekend more memorable.
