Jack Venner of Sport bittl Alcatel lucent recently participated in the first of the open adventure race series. Race partner Emma van der Gucht (also of  Sport bittl Alcatel lucent) was behind the planning of this event but will be joining him to race in the second race of the series next month. Below is the race report.

On November 7th over 320 people descended on the picturesque village of Slaidburn for Open Adventure www.openadventure.com. Racers set off in glorious sunshine to navigate their way around a testing series of bike routes and running trails around this region.

The event is first in a series with the Open 5 races all at different locations in the UK. Competitors have 5 hours to visit as many points (controls) as they can on the map. Some controls can only be collected by mountain bike and others only by foot.

Straight away racers scattered across this undulating landscape some choosing to bike first, other choosing to run. The bikers headed out on roads and trails towards Stocks Reservoir – the main challenge being too remain focussed on the event and not stopping to take in all the surrounding views as the sunshine glistened off the water of the reservoir. Racers made the 4km climb up to Bowland Knotts then screamed back down the lanes and onto the trails in Gisburn Forest.

Emma excelled herself with her route choice for both the running and cycling sections of the event. Emma’s cycle route showcased a balance of fun technical riding in Gisburn forest and some of the incredible scenery on some of the quieter lanes in the area. After the event riders could be heard discussing the route and the swooping descent at Holly Gully. “It’s a blast Emma says and one not to be missed!”

This event certainly was a treat for all participants and a hard act to follow for the remaining four events. Emma comments – “I guess it was a little bit different to previous Open 5 races, but from the grins and comments I got from people I spoke to, I think on the whole it went down a treat with people.”

The second race of the series is next Sunday 5th December where Jack and Emma will be racing together in the mixed pairs category.
